Relationships can become stagnant over time, leading to frustration and strain. Couples struggle with challenges in their relationships, but traditional solutions like counseling can be difficult to access. Study shows that lacking common goals often leads to relationship dissatisfaction, as well as a decline in connection and excitement. How might we help couples improve communication and strengthen their relationships by working towards a shared goal?

We proposed providing couples with a common goal through a virtual pet metaphor. Research has shown that having a shared objective can help bring couples closer together and reignite passion. The app allows couples to nurture a virtual pet through digital activities like exchanging love quotes, answering love trivia, and offering love coupons. Conducted extensive user research including surveys, competitive analysis of 11 apps, user personas development, user journey mapping, and multiple rounds of iterative testing including Wizard of Oz methodology.

Survey results revealing key insights: 73% feel complacency, 68% see priority shifts, and 46% lack time/resources. Analysis of factors contributing to relationship spark loss and stability.

Tested with 5 couples (10 participants total) using Wizard of Oz methodology. 9/10 participants enjoyed the overall experience and said activities boost communication. 8/10 felt pet prompts served as motivation. 10/10 understood how pet stats worked. All participants found onboarding easy and straightforward. The pet metaphor successfully motivated couples to engage with each other, and activities effectively sparked offline conversations.

Conducted quantitative survey research to identify problems in long-term relationships. Performed systematic competitive analysis of 11 relationship apps. Created user personas with 'partner mode' design. Developed user journey maps and information architecture. Three rounds of iterative testing: wireframe testing with 3 users, hi-fi prototype testing, and Wizard of Oz testing with 5 couples.
Used Wizard of Oz methodology due to time and technical constraints. Team member performed the chatbot role, sending and receiving text messages from participants separately. Tested with 5 couples (2 living together, 3 long-distance). Conducted onboarding simulation, 3 activities per couple, with 5-minute breaks between activities and 30-minute exit interviews.
Initial testing revealed high cognitive load on home screen, unclear activity frequency, and lack of progress tracking motivation. Final testing showed strong engagement with pet metaphor, successful communication catalyst through activities, and effective progress tracking with 3 pet stats (health, happiness, growth). Two out of five suggested chat functionality and notification frequency improvements.
